Two characteristics that seemed diametrically- opposed, proved to be a source of inspiration for specialists from KONI. Following lengthy development and testing, the ultimate solution was reached: KONI FSD - Frequency Selective Damping.
A revolutionary new technique whereby the benefits of both types of ride characteristics are combined in one perfect shock absorber. Banishing the disadvantages of the past. FSD shock absorbers; a smart suspension system adjusting automatically to road conditions as well as driving style. And all of this in a fraction of a second. FSD guarantees greater stability, greater control and thus greater driving pleasure.
How does FSD work?
(Information from Koni Internation Press Launch Article - Zandvoort, April 4th-5th 2005)
In standard shock absorbers, the main damping characteristic is defined by the oil flow going through the piston assembly. In the patented FSD system, KONI has added a special valve which controls an oil flow parallel to the one going through the piston. The FSD feature closes this parallel oil flow, giving a rise in damping force almost linear to the time that the piston is moving in one direction.
Put simply, the FSD feature is a hydraulic amplifier that delays the build up of pressure. It could also be described as an extra tuning option, created in order to get the best possible combination of
handling and comfort. Since it is an integrated part of the hydraulic valve system inside the damper, no additional cables, sensors, or electronics are needed to operate an FSD damper.
According to KONI, FSD is the simplest, most economical way to significantly improve the ride and driving characteristics of every car. FSD provides a smart suspension system which adjusts automatically to road conditions as well as driving style.
KONI is a leading supplier to automotive OEMs and the after market. Part of ITT Industries, it develops, manufactures and sells high quality, high performance shock absorbers for all kinds of private and commercial vehicles, including buses, trucks, trailers, railway rolling stock and racing cars.
