What does a Wastegate do? The Wastegate itself is a performance upgrade for your turbocharger system, but let's be clear, this device itself doesn't actually make any boost. Imagine a person trying to keep a door shut, and there's strong wind trying to push the door back open. Once the wind gets too strong, the door is opened. The wastegate is like the person holding the door in that situation. What the Wastegate does is hold a valve shut on the turbocharger, keeping the boost trapped in the system until there's more than the system can handle, and lets the excess boost escape.

Over time, the spring of the OEM wastegate can wear out, and so because it is weaker, the force of boost pressure pushes the valve back open earlier than it should, resulting in a mid-range loss of boost. Alternately, the wastegate itself is often in situated in poorly ventilated sections of the engine bay, which can cook the diaphragm of the wastegate. By upgrading to a wastegate actuator with firm, dependable springs made from materials designed to cope with the intense heat of real world turbocharger applications, power will be more consistent across the board and mid-range power will likely improve.
